Monday 30th April 2018 - further news and action

Posted 12:55pm
It's a wet and windy day so far, but while I am waiting to meet up with my mentor, Scott, in the midst of the ever growing Canary Wharf area, I feel it is time to expand on all that is going on.

We are preparing various pieces of paperwork - all started but not finished as yet. But this week is crucial to get as much done as possible. Business Plan is updating and emerging. Proposal and Presentation to Islington Council re working on Council Estates is proving to be tricky but exciting. I have also been gathering as much support for us, through networking and meetings.

Had a cracking meeting with Jack at the London Offices of UK Active. After attending their event last week on Technology (apps, watches etc) around the fitness industry, held at the Olympic Village site in East London, I contacted them to see if they could help us at all in our formation.  They are like a Trade Association for the industry, and their 'mantra' - in the logo above - follows what we are partly trying to achieve too. I think there is scope for us to work together. He loved our work and what we are setting out to do. Hopefully more will follow.

I have also got meetings arranged for the CCG lady, Sarah, who completed the fantastic and thorough report on us - recommending funding even though we did not achieve it. I want them on board with the council work. I also will be meeting Osh Gantly again, if re-relected in the upcoming local council elections this week, as she is the mental health champion on the council, as well as one of my local councillors, and also likes the work we are doing.

Last week, I managed to have a really good chat with a lady called Sophie, who is one of the North London co-ordinators for the Lottery. They have a "partnership and community fund" that smaller companies like ourselves can apply for, in partnership with bigger supporters. For the Council Estate presentation, we want to see if we can partner with the Council, CCG, and Public Health and apply for cash to pay for three years of work - full salaries and running costs. Ambitious? yes. But isn't that a good thing?

With all that in mind, there is a lot to do in the next fortnight. We are meeting Fateha tomorrow, the manager of Highbury Grange Medical Centre, and that is to organise a start date for the upcoming Ajani course we are running through the centre. It is a great opportunity to invite someone from the couoncil, ccg, public health to see what we are doing - event the Job centre. We are also asking to meet with Single Homeless Project re the course starting in June - just 8 weeks away.

We have to prepare the handouts and files for both those coutrses, as well as arrange the fitness sessions and the days out. Together, with the business plan, the proposal, the presentation, the finance spreadsheet for the three year forecast, and managing the fitness sessions and the walk, it is a lot to get on with - all voluntary of course.

Finally - re the walk. We are excited with numbers at the moment - and the Medical Centre recently took ownership of a fantastic Roller Banner (a picture will appear tomorrow) promoting it, that will be on display. We are coming up to the one and a half year birthday of the walk (astonishing when U think about it), and I am proposing to surprise the group with a fantastic free tour of a local building (I will leave the details out at the moment).  We also may have found a partner to start a walk in Kings Cross (more to follow).

So all is go. We are so so close to giving ourselves a chance to establish our program, build our walks, and prove ourselves.

Wednesday 25th April 2018 - Update for all

Time for an update on HMHB - what is happening, where we are going, and what we need to do.

We are looking all over for funding opportunities. We put in recently for Big Lottery Awards For All, and hopefully should hear some time around the end of May or start of June. We are also putting in to the Gunners Fund for funding to run an Ajani program with Brickworks Community Centre in Crouch End.
However, we attended a great event managed by Voluntary Action Islington yesterday that involved talks from the Big Alliance and The Lottery. Both were interesting and applicable to us. Through the Big Alliance we are hoping to get a local trustee, as well as seeing how they can help us move forward in the borough. The Lottery have relaunched their "communities" and "partnership" fund, and the timing is terrific - as we think we can use that to help us deliver work on local Estates with the Council and CCG.  Plenty of work to get along with there.

We have an exciting meeting with UkActive this Friday,  They are a great organisation that focuses on getting more people, more active, more often. They really resonate with us. I attended an event at the olympic park last week - ActiveLab on FitTech - and was impressed with their overall attitude to working with others.  I am hoping there is a way they can help us as we move forward.

We should be getting a start date for our Ajani program with Highbury Grange Medical Centre very soon - but we are already planning for it. I am organising the days out - and look like I will take the group to the Arsenal Stadium, Docklands Museum (just one bus ride away), and hopefully the British Library.  I am also planning on surprising oour Izzwalkz group with a tour of the Library too.

Next wednesday, we are meeting up with the new manager of the Highbury Pool and Gym Centre (their recent refit is excellent, with a larger gym, new exercise studios, and improved sauna/steam room area.  They like the project we are running, and I am hoping to get 2 free gym group entries for our Ajani program users, which would be terrific.

Izzwalkz - 19 April 2018

PT Dean is joining us on our Izzwalkz tomorrow - which continues to flourish - the pic above was taken in front of the Clissold Park lakes in the brilliant sunshine last week.  Dean and I can chat about how we develop the fitness side of the Ajani project, as well as our ideas for the Council Estate presentation we will be giving to Islington Council in May.

The Council has contacted us in regards to Izzwalkz. They want to run a feature on it, which should generate publicity and maybe some funding if we get them to word it correctly.  More info on that to follow.

Exciting times are ahead, we hope. But it still is reliant on funding that covers salaries.

Monday 23rd April 2018 - dealing with matters

Posted 2:22pm
Yes, I know it has been just under a fortnight since the last blog entry. And maybe, this is the time we need to be stepping up and improving productivity around our Social Media.

So why have things stalled?  Probably down to my own actions - I have still be attending events and dealing with matters, but it has felt like a bit of a grind. I did a small video for our Facebook page where I mentioned that the CCG funding not coming through was massive disappointment for us.

But we all need to get back up and forge onwards. I am seriously confident we can get salary funding for our project - it just needs to be sooner than later.#

We have several irons in the fire, and various paperwork being prepared, and I am trying to find companies/partners with whom we may get some sponsorship. I have people dependent on me to achieve our goals soon though - thinking of Luke and Dean. So a lot of pressure on me - maybe I have not handled it well lately.

A lot has been happening - and I will be adding a couple of extra entries later today with that in mind. I need to again follow our own program advice!!!

Tuesday 10th April 2018 - video editing software

At the moment, if we record a video we have to do it all in one go. Chatting to our website guy, Kacper, it seemed evident that if we want to utilise social media, especially Youtube, we would need to be able to edit videos together.  This can be a benefit when it comes to Feedback too. And our programmes, We can take various videos and then put them together as a promotion of the project. We can add sound, graphics, etc. It would make us a lot more professional looking too - something we strive to be.

With all that in mind, I met with Kacper yesterday and we ordered some recommended video software online. We can gather together video footage from some Izzwalkz, which will be good, as we have been handing out feedback forms for the Thursday outings. We can also get footage from the next Ajani programme with HGMP.  I have also suggested to Kacper that we can do a personal video with my weight loss journey (that I am on again after yoyoing). Hopefully it can be inspiring for others - and will be a terrific incentive for me.

We would also like to provide a lot more group inspiration videos for our Youtube channel - with us talking about fitness, nutrition, and mindset from our own knowledge and experience.  Exciting times ahead. Hopefully we can get the funding we need to carry all this through.

Tuesday 10th April 2018 - ball is rolling again; outdoor fitness

Matters have stood still for a while - for various reason. I have been working on several pieces of paperwork which I hope to have finished by the end of next week - these include a new updated Business Plan (which I will then run past my board for adjustments), a review of policies (as we are putting our insurance and policies onto our website for people to view if necessary), a Powerpoint presentation we want to give to the local council in regards to Council Estates, a Powerpoint presentation we want to give in regards to expanding the walking Izzwalkz project, and a review of the handouts we give on the Ajani programme.  This is one of the reasons we have not been adding a huge amount to social media lately.
We also need to prepare presentations for corporate funding opportunities, as well as corporate events for Ajani. So a lot to get on with. I admit I was finding it a little difficult, but have got over that hurdle and am soldiering on.

However, we are still arranging meetings and trying to get more funding. This week we are meeting the Council in regards to the Estate issue, talking about the possibilities and asking for an opportunity to do a presentation. We are also meeting the Icope people in Islington, who are a first-stop service for people on Mental Health. That could be a very valuable link for us.

We have a variety of ways for people to see what we are doing - all listed below. We would love people to check out our website, facebook (like and follow), twitter (follow us), as well as see articles and videos.

Plus our gofundme page is there - we are desperate for seed funding - which looks like only grants or sponsorship.

Friday 6th April 2018 - Roller Banner for HGMP

Posted 1:00pm

I am delighted that Highbury Grange Medical Centre have ordered one of our Roller Banners for Izzwalkz - that they will display in their practice. They were just under half price on Vistaprint this week, so we quickly ordered one for them. It is around 6 foot tall and is a great advert for the walk. The centre has been so supportive.

We would love the money to expand to five different walks throughout the borough. The benefits are obvious. We have been giving out contact/feedback forms to our walkers, so we can develop a report with accurate quotes - as well as update our website.

Yay!!

Friday 6th April 2018 - Where are we at? Coming few weeks; Personal

Posted 12:40pm
Yes, this is the first blog entry for a fortnight. There are a few reasons for that. We had the Easter weekend last week, but generally it is down to a bit of a down time personally. Reasons for that are not for this blog, but setting up a business can lead to huge pressures - which I do enjoy - but that itself can lead to other problems.

We are in a crossroads position at the moment. Preparing for an Ajani programme with Highbury Grange Medical Centre - we received the Islington Giving Grant money through Cripplegate last Thursday. We have covered the volunteer expenses for the last year/year and a half for various people, have spent around 250 on fitness equipment (will detail more below) as well as paid insurance. Other costs will follow. We also know we have an Ajani programme starting in June with SHP. But fundamentally, we desperately need seed funding for a year - either by grant or sponsorship. With a terrific CCG report on us, it is a frustrating position, and there is huge pressure on us to find this funding as soon as possible.

The "to-do" list is huge. Lots of papers. And it can be a bit overwhelming - you feel you are drowning in papers, all of which are important. But nothing gets done by sitting back and dreaming. And I have to confess I have not pushed hard enough of late, due to personal health concerns and general frustration. But, once again, I am back on focus. So apologies to anyone who supports me, and maybe sees me slacking. I am not now!!  Yay!!

HMHB was set up specifically to help people get back into life, whatever the issues that have affected them - which could be unemployment, depression, loneliness, substance abuse, or even physical health issues. The help we are guiding people towards, and the mind-set we are promoting, aided me significantly in the past. I need to use that again, and channel my own programme to help me. I have allowed my own health and fiitness (and mind-set) to be affected by all the project pressures. I am the heaviest I have ever been, and am starting a serious health drive from today. It's so easy to fall down, but we can demonstrate you can climb back up.

I have to say the funding for Ajani with HGMP has lifted confidence. It was great to buy exttra fitness equipment, that will be used on the programme as well as our Izzwalkz. We got 12 exercise mats, some small hurdles, extra boxing gloves and pads so that we now have six pairs of each, some resistance weights, and a large cricket-style bag on wheels so we can transport all of this more easily. I am sure our users will benefit.
